At Backyard Storage, you can refill propane right on our lot at 885 FM78 East. RV tanks, grill tanks, trailer tanks. We fill them here so you don't have to drive into San Antonio or hunt around for an open station before your trip. We refill tanks. We don't swap them out. Your tank stays your tank, and you only pay for what you actually need. You don't have to rent a storage unit to use the propane station. It's open to anyone in the area.
Who stops in for propane?
Most of our propane customers fall into a few groups:
- RV owners topping off before weekend trips out to Canyon Lake or Lake McQueeney
- Fifth-wheel and camper owners getting ready for a season on the road
- Grill owners refilling their 20-pound tank for cookouts and tailgates
- Folks who run food trailers or work trailers and need propane on hand
- Neighbors from Marion, Schertz, Cibolo, Selma, Universal City, and Seguin who'd rather not drive to a big-box store
If you're already storing your RV or boat here, the refill is just part of the stop. Pull up, fill up, hitch up, head out.
Why refilling beats swapping?
A lot of places do tank exchange. You drop off your tank in a cage and pick up a "full" one. The trouble with that:
- You pay the same flat rate whether your old tank had a little or a lot left
- The swap tank isn't always filled all the way
- You lose the tank you've spent money on
- Bigger tanks (RV, camper, larger grill cylinders) can run a few hundred dollars to replace
With a refill, you keep your tank. We put propane in it. That's it.
Tank sizes we can fill
The common ones:
- 20-pound grill tanks
- 30 and 40-pound RV and camper tanks
- Forklift cylinders
- Larger tanks - give us a call first so we can make sure we can connect to it
If your tank is unusual or has a non-standard valve, ring (830) 743-5311 before you make the trip out.
Easy stop from across the NE San Antonio area
We're on FM 78, which puts us within an easy drive from Marion, Schertz, Cibolo, Seguin, Universal City and the Randolph AFB area; Selma and the Forum area and New Braunfels. If you've been driving into the city for propane, we're probably closer.
FAQ's
Do I have to be a storage customer to refill here?
Nope. The propane station is open to anyone.
When can I come refill?
During office hours, which are generally Monday through Friday 10 to 6 and Saturday 9 to 3. Holiday weekends get busy with RV traffic, so calling ahead at (830) 743-5311 saves you a wasted trip.
What if my tank's been sitting in the garage for years?
Tanks have a date stamped on them. If yours is old, we'll take a look and let you know whether it can still be filled or if you'll need a new one.
Do you sell propane tanks?
We focus on refills, not sales. If yours can't be filled, we can point you somewhere nearby to pick up a replacement.
How long does a refill take?
A 20-pound grill tank is in and out pretty quick. RV tanks take a bit longer. Walk-ins are fine, and outside of summer weekends there's rarely a wait.

If you're storing an RV, boat, trailer, or extra vehicle in the area, ask about our RV and boat parking, drive-up units, and climate-controlled units while you're here. A lot of our regular propane customers end up keeping their other stuff with us too.
